When Observances Collide

September 2011 is official “Chicken Month” and also official “Happy Cat Month.” (I don’t create ’em, I just report ’em.)

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m having some difficulty reconciling the two objectives in a way that doesn’t end up badly for someone. (Generally the chicken.) If you asked my cats – Lily, Boo and Oobie – what would make them happy, “chicken” would rank pretty high on all three lists. Oobie wouldn’t even mind a live one, though the other two might hesitate to take on a bird that size. (Ironic that the smallest cat has either the largest ego or the least common sense.)

I don’t have any chickens – despite the new California law which apparently permits  egg-layers in urban backyards – so I’ll have to make the cats happy another way.

As an interesting aside, the Urban Chickens website has information about keeping cluckers happy in your neighborhood (wherever that happens to be) and whether anyone will have legal grounds to object if you choose to do so.

We’ll file that under “you really can find anything on the Internet.”

I’m rooting for the cats. You know why.
