Today’s Monday Blog Game topic: pets and their quirks.*
My favorite smallest cat, Oobie, has a number of quirks, one of which causes me almost constant amusement.
Oobie likes to sit on important things.
If she perceives that an object is important to me, she sits on it as quickly (and as often) as possible.
Leaving the desk guarantees she’ll take the computer, and also that she’ll be put out when I reclaim it upon my return.
Two weeks ago, when the copy edited manuscript of Claws of the Cat arrived for review, I had to persuade her to surrender the pages.
It wasn’t easy.
Some might call her obstinate, or ill-behaved, but I can see the behavior for what it is – a need to be involved in important activities (read: all activities that concern me).
Cats are known for sitting on things, but I’ve never had a cat that took it to such a carefully tailored extreme.

What a beautiful, fascinating creature! How old is she, what type of cat and how did she get the name? And long have you had her?
Thanks DeAnn! She’s four this year, but she weighs only about 4 pounds. She’s a tortoiseshell (essentially a mutt) that we adopted from a former co-worker of mine who rescued a pregnant mother cat and then needed to find homes for the babies. Oobie was the runt, but also the smartest of the litter.
We originally named her Bumblebee (for the colors and because her purr sounded like a buzz when she was small). She’s mischievous, though, and when she’d get into trouble we’d call, “You! Bee!” to get her attention. Eventually that became “Ooo – Bee!” and then “Oobie.”
So, like the old joke about the dog who says, “Nice to meet you, My name’s ‘No, Dammit,'” her name became Oobie. She’s not as troublesome anymore, but she answers to Oobie (she comes when called) so Oobie it is.
A curious aside: in our house, turkeys always said “oobie oobie” instead of “gobble gobble” because my son thought that was closer to what turkeys actually sounded like. So, in a way, I have a cat named after a turkey call.
The way Oobie’s eying your keyboard leads me to believe she plans to delete your words and type her own 😉
That wouldn’t surprise me one bit. Only in her version, the cat would be the ninja hero, for sure!
