Through the Looking-Glass

My life, since Friday, has been someone else’s life.

When you dream a dream for many years, and that dream finally comes true, its impact on your existence is nothing less than extraordinary. In many ways, life is exactly as before, and in many other ways it will never, ever, be the same again.

Last Friday, my mystery novel – the first in a series featuring a 16th century ninja detective and his Portuguese Jesuit sidekick – sold to Toni Plummer at Thomas Dunne Books – in a 3-book deal, no less. The details are still in transition, but it looks as though the series will premiere in spring of 2013.

I have self-identified as a writer almost as long as I have known how to write. Though other pursuits have paid my bills, and though I love the practice of law, it was always my goal to pursue publication. (A note to my clients, current and prospective – this publishing deal does not change or diminish my commitment to my legal practice. Don’t worry, you’re still in good hands.)

Last October, I signed with my literary agent (the fantastic Sandra Bond of Bond Literary). In January, my novel went on submission. On February 10, I stepped through the looking-glass, and nothing has looked quite the same since then, despite my initial belief that this, too, would be merely another landmark along the path.

This website will be changing quite a bit in the months to come. Nothing is leaving, but a great deal more will soon appear. Keep your eyes open.

“Curiouser and Curiouser,” Indeed.
